Title: Any mod artists or art about?
Post by: newspapersmiles on March 24, 2013, 03:25:08 PM
Had in mind to start a thread like this because I'm curious to see what kind of art mods and other people make of mods.

So if you are an artist, or just happen to find an intriguing and inspiring piece of work, why not share it with others?

I'm nothing but an amateur, but I enjoy sketching and painting with acrylic colours whenever in the mood and not lacking of time. I'm open for new ideas and my next project could be a big acrylic painting on cardboard canvas. I was thinking of making a stencil of a scooter or possibly something Quadrophenia related.

I like my paintings as stencils, black on white background and red and blue as emphasis colours. This is my latest painting. I'm hoping to get it framed soon.

Sorry for the overly big picture...

Edit: I'm also working on a painting of the Jam currently. A similar painting to the Small Faces so that I could one day put up a series of mod related paintings on the wall.

I honestly don't think I would want anything mod-themed on my walls, unless it was an original club poster, original cult movie poster or the like. Really would not want a scooter painting, Weller with a target background etc etc anywhere near my walls.

Saying that, some great artists with mod roots have been on this board in the past, including he likes of Lord Dunsby and Mick M from Sheffield, to name just two. But their ability means their work goes well beyond the borders of mod and into the commercial sector.

i'm the same dave ........ but i think it probably depends on how "long" you are in to this scene and maybe even age. i think many people move on from this sort of thing in time ..... but it acts as an introduction point for a while. bit like music and clothes too i think.

i tend to keep anything too obvious off my walls but we do have an italian 'mini and lambretta" (surprisingly as there seem to be very few lambrettas left there!) rally poster on a wall. i have a couple of punk bits up too ..... a limited edition God Save The Queen hand signed print and some punk lyric prints (featured on retro to go a while ago).

Hello Mate.

I'm guessing you are quite young & just getting into the whole scene?

It's not something I would have on my walls now as a 39 year old but would've been all over it when I first started getting into the mod thing so good on yas.

It's a good starting point for sure & hopefully you will go from strength to strength with your artwork.

If you like that screenprint style,  maybe have a look at Mel Ramos, Ed Ruscha & Peter Blake's work. The first two maybe not as obviously well known as other pop artists. I think you'll like them.

I'm not serious with my amateur experiments at all, it's more of a way of spending/wasting time (and money...) and clearing my head.

Yeah, I'm relatively young so I guess you could put all this into the excitement and that. I don't know, doing it is a good way to keep yourself concentrated (or distracted) from something.

Thanks for the names, I'll look them up.

I've always liked Lord Dunsby's art - especially his illustrations of jazz & blues musicians.
Is he still around?

Hi,
thanks for the name drop Dave
I have mod roots and would indeed have had a union jack patterned Lambretta being ridden by members of The Jam, The Who and The Small Faces jumping through a target when I was 15 and later moved onto Pop Art Peter Blake/ Richard Hamilton/ Andy Warhol etc.
My own stuff has a nod to mod on occasion but is generally wrapped up in other stuff i'm interested in too (see link).

Steve Millington (aka Lord Dunsby) is the 'go to' artist for most people of a mod persuasion.

there was a lad on the old forum who'd done a few small pieces of his own,

i remember one of them had a caption 'freakbeat? not on Eric's watch'

wouldn't mind seeing them again if he's about this time round

you have to shift through a bit (esp as hes becomes more sucessful and diversified his style) but Jason Brooks can knock out some good stuff.  Some of it is bubble gum 70s disco pop-art, some of it overly influenced by his excurssions into House music cover art (which is how i discovered him - bought the album just for the cover!)  not that any of its not good, just not relevant here.  he does flirt a lot with 60s adverts, and silohettes and 60s geometric patterns, and that stuff is brilliant (i have a limited edition over my fireplace).  actually some of the stuff in his "interiors" section quite appeal, as do some of the very sixties french stuff.

ok.  nuts do i have to upload an image elsewhere and link it?

BTW the small faces picture above is brilliantly done.  nice one.  again, once you get to be a bit older its not the sort of thing youd hang on your wall, but that says more about us and our dotage, than your abilities mate!

And to be fair, I thought the small faces one was well done. And you can't fault the subject matter!!!

This artist is not a Mod or Mod-related, but I think his concert posters are absolutely beautiful in the simplicity, in regards to graphic design.

It amazes me how he's able to tie different ideas into a single image. You might like.

And if I liked some of these bands, I'd absolutely put these up on my wall!

Some great stuff there, Carlos. As you say - a bit difficult to "connect" with them unless you're into the bands but I'd like to see more.

I'm not a professional artist, but I do like drawing. I drew these pictures of my mates Lee & Kate, and also the design for their wedding invitation.(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1097998_335802749887914_1794710080_n.jpg)(https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1146638_335802726554583_1968655754_n.jpg)(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1187217_335802756554580_963949247_n.jpg)Unfortunately the one of Kate hasn't scanned too well.

LOL

i took the boxer picture from a u.s. 19th century news article, where a white man punched the black gent. i redraw the picture and turned it the other way round. then some dabble with illustrator and photoshop and there you go.

the drawing (my version) was originally used on our soul do's posters & flyers:

nice stuff heikki! Boxer one is my fave also.

These days I don't do anything related to any music/subulture/whatever, i suppose more abstract and perhaps mid century if anything, but when I was studying art I was really into the trad skinhead scene and I did some pictures relating to it, these ones my parents have hanging up

3 purchases this week,

the Eames & Niemeyer prints are by Federico Babina and the Smiths inspired one is from an artist called Claudio Verosio, these may be familiar as they were all flagged up on retro to go...

Good shout, Mutley! I didn't know Reccardi, but his work is impressive & the 60s retro/futuristic vibe very strong, tho' I still prefer Dunsby.

The one below is one of my favourites:

I've always loved Chris Reccardi, as I grew up watching Ren & Stimpy (showing my age) and intend on getting some of his work.
I have a one-off Paul Hughes (Australian low-brow artist) print on my wall that I've had for the past 7 years that was commissioned for the inaugural Melbourne Mods vs Rockers in 2009. My Rocker mate won it in the raffle... so as I won a bottle of 4 stroke in the raffle, we swapped.  ;D It's a picture of a Mod with his girl on the back (he looks a bit like a Beatle-ish Ringo Starr tbh) and for my 30th birthday, a mate of mine bought me a Dr Alderete picture that was the artwork used on the Los Vulcanos (South American surf band) Meet the Vulcanos album sleeve. See below.

I have a couple of other scooter related/themed photos/artwork on my walls, but that's just because I like it and the walls needed covering. We have - or rather my other half has - a print of Andy Warhol's Flowers on the wall that you can see when you walk in the front door.

I like MWolski work. That polish guy somehow evokes a sovietic, eastern Edward Hopper kind of vibe, if you know what I mean; there's a strong hint of melancholy in his work. He also reminds me of some contemporary spanish painters, part of the "neo-figurative" group of artists.
