Post by: Woody 64 on November 05, 2018, 03:21:32 PM
If anyone missed this,it can be found on the new BBC sounds app.

Really enjoyed it,some great versions of Jam/SC/solo stuff.

I saw it too and enjoyed it as well. I know a few mates of mine went to it or saw the recent tour and all said his more gentle reworks of the 'classics' actually came out OK.

A fine performance I thought - loved the sloewd down Private Hell - didn't like the rugby shirt much though!

Lee,

I think Weller likes to go against the stereotypical Mod look for the most part. Hair as well in the last few years.
I can understand this from his point of view, must be murder running into so many dress/lookalikes.
Thought the rugby shirt looked ok,the ripped denims and white boots not so much. I'm sure he'll not lose any sleep over what we think though.

As for the show,I felt the musicianship/arrangements from the band and orchestra were top class. Steve craddock is a tremendous guitarist.Even the camera angles added to the whole experience.

The sad irony of Weller trying to go 'against the grain' of what many perceive as a standard 'Mod' look to create a unique style of his own always unfortunately back fires on him. No doubt in coming months at gigs and events there will be a slew of rugby shirts and white Converse. I often wonder what he asks for when he goes to the barbers too !! (Think about it)

Great shot mate. Of course the question then posed is "Was Jagger a Mod??" Certainly not a question I am asking or answering. The Eyes had a number of publicity shots done wearing rugby shirts too of course.

Don't think he was a mod but he certainly liked his coke!  ;)

I pretty sure the only mod in the Stones was/is Charlie... I always thought, especially lately, that Weller's influences in dress is a pretty broad 60's look (hence the pic of Jagger).
Hewing to the strict Ivy/Mod look probably is too "constraining" to him...

Veering off topic I know but I saw a photo of Charlie recently looks to have been taken in the Summer and the fella looks bang on still. Beautiful, what looks like Madras, shirt, Chino type trousers and loafers too as I recall. Back to Mr W! I was vaguely in his company some months back at an event and he actually mentioned how much he loved being a Mod still so he clearly considers himself to be of that ilk. He has never made any bones about it but it was interesting all the same.

Yeah Martin, he does consider himself to be a devotee, and I don't question that. And I don't really have any issue with his sartorial/grooming choices (how many of us aren't guilty at some point of a poor choice? remember the 70's or 80's? ;D)
Getting back to the Jagger photo, I have a book called "The Look : Adventures in Rock and Pop Fashion" where the author deemed that era Stones look as "Art School Mod".
Personally, I find the current Watts look a great example of "age appropriate Mod dress" and I lean more towards his and most of Weller's look since I'm closer to their ages...
Wouldn't want to see Weller jumping around stage in a "Jam" suit at this point.
I'm probably in the minority here, but how many 3 button suits or cycling tops can you own?

Thoroughly enjoyed the gig, though.  Very much a fan of Steve Cradock's less-is-more approach.  Highlights for me were One Bright Star, Man of Great Promise, and  Ever Had It Blue?

I can't see the entire show, though there are clips on youtube... whatever quibbles people may have with his dress/hair-do, you ave to admit, the man still can put on a show.

Agree 100% the clothes and 'Barnet' discussion is peripheral in many respects. When it comes down to it, given the right material the fella is still off the charts good. Certainly the last tour, and of late, when he selects some choice back catalogue songs along with new material the audience is always onto a winner. The recent BBC gig gives a sort of snap shot of that.

Just on the rugby shirt look, does anyone else know 'The Eyes'? I quite liked the eye image on their tops and always meant to try it out sometime (but done in a more classy way than them).

One of the legendary mid 60s freakbeat bands.

Now that you mention the eye motif, I saw it -better done, not as a makeshift deal- not long ago in a made in Italy sweater, but I can't for the life of me remember the brand, sorry. I just know it was in Yoox's page; in fact, I was tempted by it, but I found it a bit striking.
