I don't need to Google it, I can see it clearly on my johnson's baby shampoo, good for tootal scarves too, might work on garage floors but I'm not going to try. 😂

Lol , l meant if you google it you will find that garage floor cleaner shouldn't be applied to your skin , never mind  a babies but...............................................................whatever steers yer boat l'm only trying to be helpful ( I ceratinly wouldn't put the s**t on my Smedley's either. .
johnson's baby shampoo, has been around since the 50's so I'm sure they would've gone out of business by now if it wasn't safe.  Hints an tips been discussed on this and the old forums, when it had tailor's and bespoke tailored posts. Anyway time for ☕

I'm not so careful, gents. If it's hand-wash what's prescribed I'll do just that with an appropriate soap (or machine in wool cycle if there are enough wool garments to fill the machine), but delicate or not, ironing is the same for all (I iron most of the clobber at home, maybe that's why I try to keep it simple). The trick for me is rotating evenly the clothes I wear, so tops don't get abused.

Sounds like a sensible approach to me . I dunno about buying handwash only items , l think l would skip buying such an item,  l simply don't have the time for that palaver.
As far as liquid detergents go , most of them (yup even the baby ones) contain a harsh product called sodium laureth sulphate.  I did try a Canadian wool liquid soap but at 11 per litre l went back to snowflakes but don't put too much in the drum or you get lather everywhere  8)

Sodium laureth Sulphate, is in most products but unless you have a skin condition, your be fine, if not wear gloves 🧤

I think Weller was 15/16 in those early 70's pictures but he still attempts to do a throwback look currently but I guess he doesn't give to much thought about modism and good taste nowadays.

Greeseproof paper is also a good one to use for ironing delicate items many yarn's are woven by different machines now so you're more likely to get a computerised weave today. Gabicci, uses sea island cotton as did Smedley until they found out it was the same cotton being used.

Anything Sea island cotton should be hand washed and use the softest detergent possible because that is also a factor in damage to the garment's dry cleaners is OK but depending on how they do them bundled or separately but the best hand wash you can use is baby bath or baby shampoo, because it' has less damaging chemicals in it then dry flat but I suspect your Smedley met it's maker in the washing machine harsh love and they never fit the same.

I just wanted to put the debate in a kind of context, but hey it looks like I'm wrong again in my assumptions  ;D

Made me laugh Sir!  Get on those keyboards and slap in BOLD opinions and constructive criticism of the modernist kind.
