Mod in the media / Weekender in the Guardian - Mod

probably a nice bloke but surely a wind-up?
http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2013/aug/24/weekender-david-ling-mod

Weekends in the summer you've got all the big scooter meetings. I'll be going up to Great Yarmouth with my mate on the back of his bike. He's got a 300XL. It don't half shoot along. He opens up on the motorway and he gets to 80. It goes like a bomb. It feels fantastic on that motorway in the summer with a bit of a breeze.

We wear the mod gear on the bikes. You've got to be one of the faces when you arrive. We'll wear the suit, the trousers, the slip-ons, then straight to the cleaner's, get it all pressed so we're ready for the night.

All the biker boys go to the Ace caff. There's one big caff, but it's split. One side is for chilling out with cups of tea the scooter boys, the mods, are on that side. The rockers are on the other side. We don't go near the rockers because they all smell, don't they? Not being funny, but if it's a hot day, they come with big boots, big leathers, and they're stinking. They're sweating like an old dog. They are just not one of the faces.

You've got to look the part. I spent 500 on this outfit at the mod shop on Carnaby Street. You never buy anything that's too loud. When you're dressed, you're a face. You're noticed automatically. You don't want to stand out. You don't want to be an individual. You're all the same, one of the boys, one of the group. Get the video Quadrophenia it'll tell you everything you need to know about being a mod.

another one http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/apr/07/mod-british-style-weight-review

and mod was revived in the late 70s by two tone...is that in the book or just the reviewers mistake?

in 78/79 when we met the scooter clubs up north, there was a bit of friction and different approaches. From my experience, they couldnt understand why we werent all into scooters and we had many comments made to us that we all looked like poofs. We on the other hand couldnt understand why they were all into scooters and thought that they were scruffy and wearing flares. Kicked off a few times at the Jam at Saddleworth and then Secret Affair at Huddersfield. Met a few mods from north during that period who were opposite to that and decent blokes.

Ian - hope you are well mate.

Work as a manager in local government, suits are mandatory. Not a problem for me, always liked them anyway even way back in 77. Agree with the sentiment that looking smart isnt about slinging a suit on, many dressed casually look a lot smarter than some of the efforts you see in a suit out and about.

as I understood it, at the time of filming, there were mods in London and some made it into the film but the vast majority were that were asked to be involved  were the scooter clubs of the time, mainly from the north - the flares and taches!.... as to them being mods, thats a matter of opinion that could probably take up a thread of its own

2 new outlet stores, Pringle and Aquascutum, have opened in Hackney, joining Burberry. The Aquascutum in particular has some excellent stuff and deals in - got 25% before Christmas -, Burberry isnt as good as it used to be but sometimes some decent stuff. In the next few months a few more are opening, including some Ivy orientated stores - I did suggest to my colleagues in regeneration that Brooks Brothers would be a good addition but no luck! If I hear of any extra discounts I'll let you know.

a big run of games coming up, will we fall away like we did for the last couple of seasons under Redknapp? I hope not but as a Spurs supporter, you get used to these things! Anyway at the start of the season with a new manager - and I do rate AVB - and Modric and VDV leaving and Kaboul out long term injured, many thought that this would be a big transitional year and to be honest to still be in 4th and where we are in Europe, more than happy. Missing Sandro, who up until his injury, had been excellent. Like Holtby and hope  that he gets more playing time
