General music chat / Prisoner Soul
« on: April 14, 2013, 10:48:52 PM »
Had a listen to a 30 min radio programme about a 70s US prison scheme that let prisoners practice and play music. Released records too. Quite an interesting listen and and decent sounds.

A link and a bit of info here:

Actually the link is a trailer but you can find it on Iplayer.

Upcoming mod events / HIPSHAKER - IOW Rally 2013 - Update
« on: April 01, 2013, 09:39:27 AM »
I thought I should update this as I made the initial (april fool) post below. We're not at the IOW Rally again this year. Venue refurb is behind schedule and plan B didn't work out. As ever we hope to be there next year!

We're pretty much 99% sure we'll be at the IOW this year, should be confirming whether its Ryde Castle or our Plan B in the next few days.

However, line-up wise I can give a bit of an update. Guest DJs in the Hipshaker Room will include Eddie Piller, Paul Hallam, Smiler and more.

In room 2 though, we've been listening to some of the criticisms about "old" and "same old" genres etc so we've decided to update, so Room 2 as follows:

Fri - Inverted Audio bring us their techno house sound

Sat - Basslaced and their bass-heavy, southern hip hop/dubstep

Sun -  Jungle Splash bring us some classic jungle, dark D&B, old-school hardcore, new UK bass and dubstep

Room 2 is curated by our good friend DJ DOM D LION (a poster here under another name, he used to post more frequently but has less time now due to his more recent interest in Dubstep and related genres) more details to follow about DJs and MCs.

article in todays observer about 10 of the best record shops in britain ....... southsea's pie & vinyl (great concept!) get a little mention:

Banter / What is it about other cultures?
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:24:02 PM »
Looking at how widespread "mod culture" is across the world, and how some mods and the like from abroad seem to have a level of the anglophile about them ..... i was wondering firstly, what it is (apart from the obvious mod thing) about british culture that attracts others ...... and what it is about other cultures that attracts us brits?

as a little example, there's a couple of everyday things i like about what i've seen of some european culture (mostly in spain, france and italy). the way they do cafe culture. nice and relaxed, easy going, table service etc. bars too, often very relaxed with table service ..... apart from once when i was taken to an "english pub" in Nice. Crowded, shouty and heaving at the bar!!

in italy specifically they seem to be a little more dog friendly too. they seem to allow them in most shops .... many restaurants too. although strangely they don't always seem so affectionate towards their dogs.

An old article from our local paper about the legendary Birdcage Club as frequented by many of the great 60s acts including The Action. Excuse the poor quality photos!
