Banter / Re: Forum - coming up to a year
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:31:22 AM »
I hugely appreciate the forum, its my only connection to anything remotely mod these days, what with having drifted away from that sort of scene in my real life. So I certainly wouldn't be adverse to the idea of asking people to donate a few quid if it helps keep things ticking over!
What more can I say? The post above pretty much sums up what I feel towards the forum, but I realize it's not fair you (Dave) maintain it at a cost to your personal life, so please think about it, we'll be grateful no matter the final decision. Anyway thanks very much for the effort.

Whereabouts will you be that you will be wearing trunks in March?

Unless you're staying at a hotel with an indoor pool??

Indeed. But we are going to Miami, LA, San Francisco and Vegas. It's spring time so the weather will be more than pleasant.

I saw your post greenstreet and I'm keeping an eye on that site but it's the slightly shorter 'setter' I'm after ideally and in white. The search goes on.

I was searching for the setter too, but I couldn't pass on the chance of the mid-priced bulldog, I've spent years trying to find  the bloody thing at a decent price, seems the brand NEVER does discounts, online at least.

Keep in mind the bulldog sits just over the knee and it's fitted, not your typical surf boardshorts, if you're looking for a classic short it looks the part. I agree with you however in the color issue, white looks better than blue.

Anyway, good hunt!

Sunspel's got a fine repro of the trunks Sean Connery wore in Dr No, but I'm afraid they`re in the price range of the OBs. BTW I got a beautiful white bulldog shorts from OB weeks ago for 80 in Yoox (I posted it), and maybe they still sell them (in blue). Good luck & happy holidays.  8)

The jumpers fit me like a glove (to be pricky the sleeves are a little too long, but that's it). I'd say they're true to size, I take a small in most labels and Uniqlo is no exception.

Short sand mac from the Cortefiel Heritage Collection. Made here in Spain, it's a single-breasted mac, a very simple design (based on a 70s archive piece) but with lots of details. I'll post pics when I receive it. Best of all, it was reduced from 270 to 134 !!!!!!

Here's the beast. Not so short as I expected but it fits me right. The downside is that I found out the mac is made in Morocco, not Spain. Anyway lots of details, like the adjuster on the cuffs, a back dart with a button or hand sewn hems. Some of the pics are crap but you get the idea.

Finishing Verve: the sound of America, a delightful coffee-table book about the jazz label and his founder, Norman Granz. Besides the story of the label, the book includes short profiles of the jazz stars that recorded for Verve, the usual suspects: Ella, Jimmy Smith, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, W. Montgomery...

But to me the appeal of the book lays specially in the images: dozens of Verve albums' covers and some outstanding pictures of their artists (there's for instance a B&W '58 caption of JSmith from below that defines once and for all what's COOL) and of the US jazz hangouts of the central decades of the 20th century. On the down side, there are factual mistakes on the dates of some pics (call me pricky, I can't stand the lack of accuracy) but it's a relief that the book doesn't waste many pages on the last  years of what is now, sadly, just part of a faceless group of enterprises.
