45s You've recently bought
« on: March 22, 2013, 09:36:39 AM »
This was always my favourite topic on the old forum so here we go.
Due to the recent hike in postage hikes from the US i havent been buying much lately.
I've lost count of the versions of Comin Home Baby i have so when i heard Mark Ellis play a ska version a couple of years ago i just had to have it.
As i say its taken a few years but eventually ive got a copy of Roland Alphonso " Christine Keeler on its way to me"

What have you picked up?

Monty Alexander - Spunky. I bought it for the flip side, Rattlesnake, but that's not on YouTube. Nice dancefloor jazz shuffle.

Yep! A great tune and one that I tend to keep on hand when out dj'ing.

Recently I picked up a couple of repressings
Firstly on bgp records Jean Jacques levy- eva with camille yardbrough on the flip doing take yo praise.
from the jazzman label marlena shaw with California soul and her blasting version of wade in the water on the b side.
Also digging Shirley Nanette with all your life and people are thinking from truth and soul records.

Recent debate about this on soul source, comparing it to the cold blood version. Most preferred Barbara Lynn ... although one or two went for cold blood which is my favourite. It's a "banger". I've got both.

Elmore James - Stranger Blues (Fire)
Got a great raw guitar break in it.

Cold blood version is not bad. But it's Barbara Lynn for me !

like i said, that seemed to be the consensus on soul source. a great tune no doubt. has other qualities but for me lacks the power of cold blood. i played it a couple of weeks ago at hipshaker and on the sound system we use (wedgewood rooms, full professional in house live band set up) it sounded immense. both great versions in their own way though.
