60s French pop music
« on: April 14, 2014, 02:47:23 PM »
A very broad thread title I know, but I'm not sure exactly who or what I'm looking for. Today I started listening to Serge Gainsbourg (a favourite) on Youtube which led me to the lovely Françoise Hardy..

I love this. I don't speak much French whatsoever, but it sounds lovely. Does anyone on here have any recommendations for more French 60s music?

Please try Nino Ferrer, he's virtually unknown outside of France, but he's the best gallic 60's soulman, his first LP's a classic, humorous and powerful. Nowadays they're using one of his songs (Le cornichon) for a TV ad here in Spain. Jacques Dutronc's worthwile, like a punked-up french Dylan and has some classy pop songs. Antoine aped Dylan too, but he's not so good at it. 60s Johnny Haliday is a little hit or miss, but he recorded two or three powerful numbers with the Small Faces. There were some garage/beat bands in France too, but the country specialized in soloists. Of course, don't miss Gainsbourg, great atmpspheric music and cool songs.

If you like Françoise Hardy, France Gall's a good bet in the "ye ye girls" department.

Anyway, to me the GREAT 60s french singer/songwriter is and always will be (along with Brel) Claude Nougaro, tho' he's more jazz/chanson oriented.

Gainsbourg's the best place to start.  Up to early 70s and songs that he wrote for others (including wonderful "Contact" for Bardot).   Dutronc, Francoise Hardy, France Gall (Best of comp), ....      for something a bit more laid back, try early Yves Simon.

Thanks chaps. A marvellous selection above and I've just thrown £25 down for 6 Francoise Hardy albums, '62-66 on eBay. It's....it's her face  :-*

And beautiful voice, obviously.

This looks  a nice (French) collection from ace records , the album art/photo is worth the spend alone.

Is it one of the comps curated by Saint Étienne? Anyway, it's unforgivable they didn't include "Quatre boules de cuir" or "Paris mai" from my idolized Claude Nougaro.

If you want to listen to this stuff without having to click on individual tracks you might like this compilation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mseyVZ0JNOM&list=RDGpM3iwAwxoE&index=3

I'm not entirely convinced its as groovy as other stuff from that era but its certainly an interesting lot and I'm a sucker for the French language. Ooh la la!
