This a great album to get you stared.http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B000NOKF3U/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr1_1?qid=1397491577&sr=8-1-fkmr1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165

seconded - great compilation.

Be careful with SG - you'll end up wanting to complete your collection of his albums and buy his eighties output some of which is complete gash!  I know - I've bought them all :D

Francoise is a beautiful woman with an astonishing voice and the Dutronc boxset is a very worthwhile purchase. The best SG album to get is the recent London-Paris compilation, his best late sixties/early seventies output and puts together most of the stuff from the pretty rare comp 'Les Années Psychedeliques 1966-1971'. Theres also Brigitte Bardot who did some stuff with SG (Bonnie & Clyde) and this is a good comp to start with;

Gainsbourg has been well served by compilers on the CD era, and at least 3 compilations deal with his 60s "psychedelic" phase, with heavy overlapping between them. If you're a completist, no problem either, as french pop's "enfant terrible" is revered as a bona fide genius in France and there are lots of individual reissues and boxsets that cover his entire "oeuvre".
