I've just purchased this, the last instalment in the legendary Kent's "Mod Jazz" series. Haven't listened to it yet, but the tracklist is enough guarantee.

Mine arrived today and after first listen a big thumbs up; a couple of pot boilers in there but those far outweighed by the quality.
And will you shorten the sleeves, love? I'm not a gorilla.

I've ordered a copy of this from the new Ace releases (it's yet to arrive).
Also ordered a copy of the latest Mod Jazz instalment if only for completist's sake; I have found some in the series to be a bit patchy but, as we know, jazz is a broad church and they'll be something to appeal to many on each disc;)

That Hungary disc sounds intriguing, please tell us if it's worthy when you have a listen, will you?

Arrived today and...yes, it's worthy of a listen. They were very found of that fuzz guitar sound. Sarolta Zalatney is an artiste who has immediately struck my ear and worthy of further investigation.
Some of the songs have that jaunty femme pop arrangement with strings and things, think of stuff that Lulu or Sandie would have recorded in the late 60s and that'll give you an idea. Booklet is beautifully designed as well with, as you'd expect from Ace, exhaustively researched biogs and repros of quite wonderful record sleeves.
And will you shorten the sleeves, love? I'm not a gorilla.

especially track 1 🎩

Great record, and yes, first track is funky as hell. Archie Shepp was in his black power phase, when he mixed soul-funk with free and spiritual jazz with exhilarating results. "Kwanza" or "The Cry of my People" offer more in that vein, but "Attica Blues" is the best of the lot, IMO.

Will definitely dig deeper into Archie’s back catalogue, hoping for more of that black power funk/soul (the jazz signature not really my bag) any info who does the female vocal on blues Attica track 1? ta

The Lucid Dream - Actualisation. Great review on Monkey's blog about this one.
Primal Scream - Give Out...original Memphis recordings. Much prefer this to the '94 version. Much more rootsy.
Various - St. Etienne present songs for the Carnegie Deli. There's something I find just fantastic about those NYC Brill Building big production songs of the 60s and this one ticks the boxes.

Just got a hold of the new Give Out Ady,a great album. Bobby was on 6music a few weeks ago discussing it...great wee insights, always a character!

Currently listening to True Meanings by Weller.

Best thing he's done for years. There's always a good few on each new album that I like but this is a real cohesive body of work. Aspects,White Horses and Mayfly the standouts for me.

Also like the new The Good, the Bad and the Queen track Merrie Land.
