Curtis Mayfield on Beat Club. Passed me by, just read about it in new Shindig! issue.

Great, one of my favourite 70s soul/funk auteurs, besides Gil-Scott Heron. People don't seem to be aware that Curtis was a great guitar player, learning some licks when younger from Pops Staples, no less. Here he was at his peak as a songwriter and singer too. The sparse backing reminds me that of his live 1971 LP, one of the best concert records I've listened to.

Damn fine image restoration, also. A good 'un, Ady.

He's my fave soul artist; his body of work both with The Impressions (especially those late 60s albums) and that run of the first five solo albums are wonderful. His guitar playing was exceptional too, so subtle and melodic, you can here that influence on Hendrix's lyrical playing.

Guess you already own them, but there's a cheap recent reissue of his 4 first solo studio albums in a CD boxset.

Here's another colour clip from Beat Club, again mentioned in Shindig! magazine and also on the main Modculture website: The Small Faces in all their 67 day-glo splendour.

Too beautiful indeed! A pity they lip-synched, guitars aren't even plugged in! Coincidentally, I'm watching a stunning, beautifully restored, comp of Beat Club episodes from 1965 to '68 and yesterday was the turn of a 1967 episode with the Who, Geno Washington and Jimi Hemdrix playing live at the Marquee; stuff dreams are made of...
