Keith Moon x Ben Sherman
« on: October 08, 2018, 10:18:59 AM »
The 40th anniversary of Moonie's death seems as good a chance to keep milking the cow as any, and who has eagerly jumped at the chance? No less than "mod-exploitation" specialists Ben Sherman. The result? A disgusting and pointless collection that even a comedy mod would find hard to swallow. That the whole mess is sanctioned by the Keith Moon state adds insult to injury:

Ugh. Looks like every other mass market label.
Ben Sherman hasn't had a decent looking line in decades.

I have been a big fan of Moons work for most of my life. In 1979 I was able to buy a 1" button badge that said "Who are we without Moon" and l wore it as a wee tribute to Keith.  .
Would l touch any of this latest "collection " ? Probably not but considering that Moon was a bit unhinged at the best of times ,  he might well have liked it .  Facts are we will never know.

I like some of their archive shirts, with proper 3 fingers' collars. But even in that line, with the huge archive they probably have I'm sure there are tons of nicer shirts to be reissued than the ones they've chosen.

I think I'm with you guys. Not for me. At a push the check one is half OK if someone bought it for me as a gift and I didn't want to hurt their feelings. The thing is is that if the company sling a load of money at Moon's Estate they are never going to turn it down. Same as a few years back when I think Lambretta did a WHO endorsed/inspired range. The remaining band members always admit their actual connection to the Mod thing was tenuous and contrived but they do however embrace the fact that they will be forever entwined with it all as far as the general public are concerned. In honesty though I doubt anyone will have to wait long until TK MAXX are awash with these items if they are keen to buy them even as items of Who/Moon memorabilia.

It is possible that the early Who/High Numbers would not have made it without the Mod's that followed them to places like The Aquarium and the Railway Hotel around '64 . However , despite the outward appearance l don't think anyone would argue that as individuals any of the Who were Mod's . Despite this Mod's did still favour their music and the band went onto embrace the whole Pop Art thing. I might be wrong but l do think that Moon was the last member to ditch the Mod image.

My first introduction to Mod was buying Qudrophenia in 1976 after a school friend had regaled me about it for weeks. So Who fan first then a Mod , whereas l know for many it would be the other way around.

I saw Pete Townsend being interviewed in '79 about being on his way to a gig and seeing a bunch of parka clad guys standing outside of the venue . Townsend went onto say that he went up to one of them and said "Do you know who l am?" Apparently the guy just looked at him and Townsend just assumed the guy didn't know . I thought then that he wouldn't get away with that with me but little did l know that less than 2 years later l would meet Pete whilst wearing my parka and after a short chat he went on to sign his name on it . I was right about him not making the remark to me. .

Fantastic story Simon. I'm not knocking The band at all. I bloody love 'em and have seen them countless times over the last 30 years. My Uncle was a fan as a teenager so I grew up with their stuff in the house including QUADROPHENIA and that amazing booklet that came attached to it. I think there were however a fair few bands of that era who Mods went to see simply because young kids went to the local dance halls and clubs as it was the pre record spinning era on the main. The Who, under Meaden's, guidance then saw a gap in the market and thought it an idea to give these potential hardcore Mod punters a figurehead group. Of course to some extent they succeeded particularly when Lambert and Stamp came on the scene.

Yeah Martin , you are spot on about the " gap in the market" and of course it took a guy like Meaden to guide the Who to the gap , which they went onto fill quite well of course . Lambert and Stamp worked some pure genius by bring out the best in the group.
You are probably right about people going along to their local venue to hear music too . It is possible that the Who just started playing to the crowd and thus created their following that way as they did become known as a Shepards Bush band, and when they did get a record deal they were very much a singles group as , even as a fervent fan l still think the first album is patchy.
Having seen some really good live acts over the years , l still don't think anything comes close to the Who , right from that first chord of the first track(usually Can't Explain) , they are in a different dimension and that is something that for me doesn't really work when you watch them live on tv . I don't think that would make sense to someone that hasn't seen them live and l didn't think you were knocking them Martin .

Going back to the gap in the market bit , l also think that about 12yrs after the Who did that another band , the Jam , did a very similar thing to some extent. ..
