Mondaine Classic 40mm with a nato strap

Denis, I've always loved the Mondaine watches, a classic if there ever was one (and far from my budget for a watch, sadly), but I can't see the appeal of the Nato straps, sorry.

Decent looking bit of kit there Syd. Timex has form recently for putting out some watches based on their archives and they are selling really well. My first ever watch was a Timex which I think I got for my 6th or 7th birthday and still have. It still works too!

Rod, nice compliment coming from a true pro when it comes to watches. I've seen your (or part of it) collection and it's impressive, you play in another league really.

Praise indeed Sydney. Here’s the collection since I forgot I’d mentioned a pic upthread. I since added a Milgaus with blue dial and green glass. Still on the waiting list (over two years!) for the new GMT Pepsi. Contemplating a Moon Watch if I come across a decent used bargain, and I really like the new Omega NTTD Bond watch. But after that I’m definitely done! Maybe a Bremont to fly the flag for a British watchmakers?

Looks very similar to my Timex that gave up the ghost at some point in the 7ts and was replaced by a Seiko..  l currently own 7 watches , all gifted to me bar 1 and that Sieko is still running over 40 yrs later

Those all look lovely,  but can cheap watches ever  be ok in Modcultureworld ? Well, the Timex Marlin has a 34 mm case, so it sticks to the original model size-wise, and while not as cheap as the Lorus, it isn't really expensive when you consider standard prices for watches. The Milano, while bigger, is even cheaper. And of course cheap watches can be stylish, why not? Looks and performance are different things.

Yup. Everyone might have a different definition of ‘cheap’ but brands like Seiko, Citizen, Tissot etc have wide ranges of watches which will do the job as well or better than any expensive mechanical / automatic and within their ranges are bound to be some that are appealing.

And while not strictly ‘Mod’ (not even sure what a Mod watch is!) in the bottom row in my case is a Seiko diver which retailed for about $350 but I got for $160 off eBay.

The Pulsar bottom right is water thin and I wear that on the rare occasions I’m in black tie. That was inherited from my dad but Pulsar watches aren’t too expensive even now.

Also there the vintage market. Red Steve started a watch by bread off with pics of a vintage King watch IIRC that looked very early sixties period.

I reckon that Pulsar is the same size as the Marlin, which tbh is the size that suits me most. Prompted by Steve's post I took a look at some vintage ones on ebay and especialist webstores, but for the most part they were quite battered, not the kind of accessory I'd wear without a sentimental value attached to it.

The "Military Watch Co" also do some quite nice traditional analogue watches with a smaller face (About the same size I think as the Timex Marlin)   - their reproduction "Vietnam " watch goes for about £35 new on ebay -you can get it in black as well as the traditional green, and put it on a nice "James Bond" or similar stripey Nato strap. Their "MWC G10" is similar, but with a date, and goes for about £70
