A textbook case on how to ruin a decent garment. This Benetton mac looks really fine (even the lenght), but they had to mess it up with that unnecessary, ugly chest zip pocket.

Even worse (and you should see the back, with a huge "New York Yankees" sign embroidered). Why Gucci is making extremely expensive -3.500 - coats for a baseball team is anybody's guess, but there's got to be a niche market for this abortion. Maybe a NYY fan with lots of money and zero brains?

French brand "Sports d'Epoque" has always struck me as a good idea badly accomplished.

Broadly speaking, their aim is to recreate the spirit of sports in more innocent, gentlemanly times, but in a rather french way their garments never ever take the desirable minimalistic path, and usually end up overcharged by all manners of embroidered stuff that almost ever ruins their retro charm. Their new collection, however, contains this rather sober and classy apres-ski jumper (the shield I could live with). A pity the 200 price tag...

A similar jumper from specialist brand Rossignol (a bit more expensive at 225 ):

Another brand trying to honour the italian knits' tradition with a nod to british heritage is The Gigi. They manufacture in Italy mainly with cotton and wool (mixed with more exotic fabrics, as alpaca or camel hair), so they're not on the cheap side, expect more than 200 for any of their pieces. But my, do they look gorgeous:  8)

I did a bit of digging into The Gigi and found the website for the parent company Gabucci which seems to be Swedish. Some nice stuff but proper money. The conversion from Swedish Krona to pounds is 0.086 which means this beautiful pea coat will set you back 2881 + postage.

That Gabucci store has got some stylish clobber, for sure, but prices hurt, even with the discounts. Anyway, it has reminded me that, besides knitted tops, the Gigi is making beautiful classic double breasted and 3 button jackets too; more of a continental shape than Ivy League, tho'.

Laird, I agree, that collar ruins what would have been a nice peacoat.
